Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
