EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
