The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
